Benjamin Coons
, M.D.
Dr. Benjamin Coons grew up in Northwest Indiana. He went to school and earned his Bachelor of Science from the University of Notre Dame and his Master of Medical Science from Hahnemann University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He completed his doctor of Medicine at Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis, Indiana, where he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. Dr. Coons completed an internship and residency in urology at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee.
At Vanderbilt University he trained extensively in laparoscopic, robotic, and urologic reconstructive procedures. Dr. Coons takes care of all general urological conditions, and he specializes in performing complicated kidney stone procedures, treating prostate cancer and enlarged prostate (BPH), and he is focused on minimally invasive surgical options. He has published research on kidney cancer and sacral neuromodulation, an advanced treatment for refractory urinary urgency/frequency. He has more than two decades of experience and specializes in complex oncology, da Vinci® robotic surgery, laparoscopy, and male reconstructive procedures.
At a young age, Dr. Coons was interested in medicine and understanding the anatomy and physiology of the human body.
He remembers his own experience of having a great doctor and surgeon care for him and the impact that left on him led him to become interested in being a doctor. He wanted to work in a field where he would have the ability to improve the quality of life for his patients. Urology offered him just that. He also liked that he had the opportunity to do both surgery and take care of patients in a clinic setting, where he could build relationships. He likes the rapidly advancing technology in the field of urology which allows him to care for patients in new and creative ways. Most importantly, he likes solving problems – like removing a kidney stone or curing a cancer – so that patients can get back to their lives. Dr Coons prides himself on treating each patient with the same respect and dignity that he would with a family member.
Dr. Coons is board-certified by the American Board of Urology and is a member of the American Urological Association, Colorado Medical Society, El Paso County Medical Society, and Rocky Mountain Urological Society. He is on the board of the Rocky Mountain Kidney Stone Center.
Outside of work, Dr. Coons likes family time with his wife and daughter. Together they ski, travel, hike, mountain bike, play tennis and pickleball.
