Dr. David Cuellar is a board certified urologist with Urology Austin

Dr. David Cuellar completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Texas – Austin, his medical training at UT Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, and his medical residency at the University of Maryland. Dr. Cuellar also completed an advanced training fellowship in minimally invasive/laparoscopic surgery and complex stone surgery at the University of Pittsburgh. He has special interests in robotic surgery and laparoscopic surgery for the treatment of all genitourinary cancers. Other areas of interest includeBenign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH or enlarged prostate), kidney stone treatment and prevention, vasectomy, elevated PSA, prostate cancer, and low testosterone.

Dr. Cuellar offers Aquablation for men with BPH. This FDA approved procedure uses a robotic-guided water jet to precisely remove prostate tissue overgrowth and restore function and relieve the symptoms of enlarged prostate.

Dr. Cuellar serves as the head of Urology at Seton Northwest Hospital (2017-present), a position he held at St. David’s North Austin Medical Center for the six prior years.  He has been on the Robotics Steering Committee for both hospitals. In addition, he is a proctor/trainer for the daVinci Robotic Surgical System and began using the daVinci robotics system in Austin in 2004.

• In 2004 – Dr. Cuellar was one of the first two surgeons in any specialty in Austin to use the daVinci robotic surgical system. In addition, he was the first Urologist in North America to use the daVinci Xi Surgical System
• In July 2018 – Seton Northwest Hospital recognized Dr. David Cuellar for completing 1,000 robotic Urology surgeries. At that time, Dr. Cuellar was the  only practicing urologist in Austin to have accomplished this.
• In 2019 – Dr. Cuellar was trained on the daVinci SP (single port) Surgical System – the newest state-of-the-art robotic system that reduces surgical access to one incision, while allowing 360 degree maneuverability and an expanded range of surgical instruments.
• In June 2024 – Dr. David Cuellar performed the first urologic surgeries in Austin using the new Da Vinci 5 robotic technology. This newest generation of the Da Vinci robot is the first and only system that gives the surgeon the ability to “feel” what they are operating on. Prior to this, it was all based on visual cues. It also provides more advanced 3D imaging, better ergonomics for the surgeon and with 10,000 times the computing power of prior generations, it allows for shorter surgeries.

Dr. Cuellar has been recognized as a “Top Doctor” under the category of Urology every year from January 2013 through January 2024 in Austin Monthly Magazine.

Dr. Cuellar lives in Austin with his wife and 2 daughters and enjoys tennis and golf. He is a member of the Sportsman’s Club, supporting the Rise School of Austin, and was recognized as a Physician Recipient of North Austin Medical Center’s Frist Humanitarian Award in 2009.

Dr. Cuellar is Known as a National Leader in Aquablation Therapy for BPH/Enlarged Prostate

Dr. David Cuellar is recognized as a top volume Aquablation surgeon in the state of Texas with more than 200 cases completed.  Currently, he is the only of only two surgeons in Texas with this distinction, and one of only 20 physicians nationwide!  Additionally, he is a national trainer for the Aquablation procedure, training other more than 14 urologists from around the country on the surgical technique.  Aquablation is a minimally invasive treatment option for men with BPH (enlarged prostate). It is an innovative new procedure that uses robotic guidance of a heat-free water jet to remove excess prostate tissue and eliminate the symptoms of enlarged prostate in men. It  is known for reducing the chance of incontinence or sexual side effects following treatment.

Dr. David Cuellar has also achieved the UroLift Center of Excellence (COE) designation! UroLift is a minimally invasive treatment option for men with Benign Prostastic Hyperplasia (enlarged prostate).  To receive this designation, Dr. Cuellar was required to perform a specified number of UroLift procedures each month, be clinically proctored on the safe and effective use of UroLift to provide clinical excellence, and participate in a minimum of two NeoTract Center of Excellence continuing education events per year. He has also demonstrated UroLift Clinical Excellence by collecting and reviewing patient outcome data, exhibited clinical excellence skill levels, and helped patients achieve positive outcomes.
