John Adams, Jr.
, M.D., FACS
“I treat my patients the way I’d like to be treated or the way I’d like my family to be treated – the patient always comes first.”
Dr. John Adams is a native of Memphis. He completed his undergraduate education at Southwestern at Memphis (now Rhodes College), where he was elected to the Phi Beta Kappa honor society. He earned his medical degree from the University of Tennessee College of Medicine. He served his internship and residencies in surgery and urology at Louisiana State University Medical Center in Shreveport, where he was Chief Resident in Urology from 1989-90.
During medical school, Dr. Adams knew he was interested in a surgical specialty and considered a variety of them, but ultimately decided to specialize in Urology. Dr. Adams is a second generation urologist. His father was also a urologist and after he finished medical school, he had the opportunity to practice Urology alongside his Dad for 5 years before he became one of the founders of the Conrad Pearson Clinic.
Dr. Adams training is unique in that he specializes in the larger, open surgeries for conditions that are not able to be treated with minimally invasive treatment options.
During his training he had a concentration on treating kidney stones and stone research. He specialized in complex kidney stone disease where larger stones are surgically removed in an expeditious and effective way. He is also a specialist in treating cancer cases where laparoscopic surgery is not an option and open surgery is necessary to remove the cancer.
Dr. Adams was a former clinical instructor in the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Tennessee and has published and presented dozens of research articles on subjects of urological importance. Over his career he has also been active in many hospital committees and professional organizations. He is certified by the American Board of Urology and is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
Dr. Adams is married and has two children and two granddaughters. When he is not working, he enjoys traveling internationally. In fact, when he was young his father was in the military, and he lived in Europe for several years. He collects European antiques. He also enjoys scuba diving, underwater photography, genealogy research, and hunting. He is active in his church where he has taught Bible studies for many years.
